Holocaust Memorial Day 2021

The BID lit The Magical Tree of Light purple as part of the city's annual Holocaust Memorial Day Proramme.

The programme seeks to embrace the theme 'Be The Light In The Darkness' by lighting up iconic locations in purple to mark the 27th January, the National Holocaust Memorial Day.

Why does York hold value in HMD?

HMD holds a particular significance in the city due to the 1190 massacre of 150 Jews (the entire York Jewish population at that time) within Clifford’s Tower. Each year a service is held here, on and around the 16th March to commemorate the events of the past and to remember what happened in our city. York is committed to delivering an annual Holocaust Memorial Day programme and as a City of Sanctuary it important to remember and reflect upon to pave the way forward.
