City Centre Insights November 2022

Footfall

Data provided by O2 indicates that during November 2022 shows that York city centre experienced a 2% increase in footfall compared to the previous month and a decrease of 7% with respect to November 2021.

The highest footfall levels were experienced on the last two Saturdays, following the launch of the the York Winter Lights and Christmas markets.

Visitor Demographics

Visitor demographics were overall consistent with the previous month, however we can observe a slight increase in the proportion of visitors who visit on a single occasion, and a slight increase in the proportion of visitors aged over 55.

41% of visits were made by ‘locals’ with home locations based within a 10km radius of the city centre, whereas 40% of total visitor traveled from 50km away or more. This is consistent with visitor patterns observed in October. Note that figures do not reflect visits from oversees.

Overall, 32% of visitors were from the York Local Authority District. A 1% decrease on the previous month.

Spend

VISA data shown in the report is from Q3 (July to September 2022), which shows a lower proportion of merchant sales witnessed during September than in either of the previous 2 months. The most significant reductions in spend compared to August were seen across Restaurants (-18.5%) and Retail & Hight Street (-26.4%). Hotel & Accommodation saw a slight increase (4.8%).

On average, visitors travelling to the city centre from 30km or more spent 26.3% more per visit than those within the 30km radius.
