Safe Cycle Initiatives

Secure Cycle Storage

In early 2019 the BID brought more than 90 additional bike parking spaces to the city. This increased the overall capacity of city centre cycle parking by 10%. Along with this we brought seven new sign posts showing a map of the cities cycle routes and all the available cycle parking. Cycle racking has been provided for the following areas:

  • Blake Street
  • High Petergate
  • Spark:York Piccadilly
  • Lord Mayors Walk
  • Esplanade
  • Dean Gate
  • St Maurice’s Road
  • George Street
  • Castlegate Area

Removing Abandoned Bikes

The BID is working with City of York Council to identify and remove abandoned bicycles from within the BID area. Commuters into the city have often commented on the need for additional secure cycle storage, The BID has added an additonal 10% of cycle storage space across the city. However we have identified that this and much of the already exisiting space is taken up with long forgotten and abandoned bikes. We’ve been working to clean up the streets. To date, nearly 150 abandoned bicycles have been removed from across the city, freeing up some much needed space for our keen cyclists.

The BID have struck up a partnership with Recycle, a family business located on Walmgate, to repair, refurbish and repurpose these bicycles if they’re unclaimed after a three month period. After all, with the right care and attention, there’s life left in these bicycles!
