Window Dressing and Vacant Shops

Our window dressing project has helped improve the image of our business community. The installation of dressing options to shopfront windows leads to the quicker letting of empty properties and improves the overall look of the city for visitors and residents.

The BID has invested in dressing over 15 vacant shops across the city centre, including properties in Coney St, Jubbergate, Goodramgate, Feasegate, Micklegate, Bridge St, George Hudson St and North St.

Alternative use of vacant units

York BID have also worked with Blank Canvas (part of the Skippko charity), the Retail Forum and City of York Council to identify vacant commercial properties in the city centre that may be suitable for pop-up shops and exhibitions. in 2018 York Conservation Trust gave permission for 60 Goodramgate to be used as a temporary art exhibition space for two artists whilst long term tenants were found. In its first weekend alone nearly 100 people visited the gallery. in 2019  the BID supported Blank Canvas to occupy 5 Blake street for 6 months until a permanent tenant was found.
