York BID announce new Night Safe Officers to keep city centre safe and orderly
York BID are pleased to announce the launch of a brand new Night Safe Officer programme dedicated to making York’s thriving nighttime scene safer and more welcoming for everyone.
Starting on Friday 25th July and running until early January 2026, two friendly and highly visible Officers will be on patrol every Friday and Saturday night from 8pm to 2am – right when York’s nightlife is buzzing the most.
The Officers will help tackle anti-social behaviour, keep noise levels down, and de-escalate potential issues before they grow. They’ll act as a crucial link between the public, door staff, and emergency services.
By being out and about at the busiest times, the Officers will help ease pressure on emergency services while making sure everyone can enjoy their night safely and respectfully.
The initiative is proudly funded by the York & North Yorkshire Combined Authority Policing, Fire and Crime Directorate. It plays a key role in supporting York’s Purple Flag accreditation, recognising the city as among the safest, most welcoming, and best-managed nighttime destinations in the country.
Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID, said: “We’re thrilled to launch the Night Safe Officers programme as part of our ongoing commitment to a safer and more enjoyable York. It’s a fantastic way to support the city’s Purple Flag status and provide that extra level of care for York’s thriving nighttime economy.”
Jo Coles, York and North Yorkshire Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime said: “Everyone has the right to be safe and feel safe when visiting York and North Yorkshire, and as Deputy Mayor for Policing Fire and Crime I am delighted we’ve been able to support York BID in deterring crime and anti-social behaviour while making York even safer for residents, businesses and visitors.
“David Skaith’s vision as Mayor is to deliver safer communities for all, and our £14,473* investment in the Night Marshalls project will help to establish a visible, reassuring presence for people who are enjoying York’s amazing nightlife, and further enhance the welcoming environment that visitors have come to expect from our city. “
The new Night Safe Officers will join York BID’s Riverside and Taxi Marshal programmes, which have supported the city centre for 1,760 hours so far. They’ll work together to ensure York stays safe and welcoming for all, whether you’re heading home or enjoying a night out.
