York BID launches York BID Safety Network to strengthen citywide security and business collaboration

York BID are pleased to announce the launch of the York BID Safety Network, helping create a safe, vibrant, and diverse city for everyone to enjoy.

The York BID Safety Network encompasses the city-wide radio network, Sentry Secure Intelligence System, and the coordination of both Pub Watch and Shop Watch schemes – offering businesses real-time tools to report, respond to, and prevent crime and anti-social behaviour.

Previously at risk of closure due to the retirement of its former coordinator, the city-wide radio scheme has now found a new home under York BID. This transition reflects the organisation’s ongoing commitment to creating a safer and more secure environment for everyone in our community. As part of the BID’s commitment to this initiative, they’re thrilled to offer levy-paying businesses a reduced price of £25 per month +VAT – that’s an annual saving of £144!

The value of the network was recently demonstrated when a city centre shoplifting incident – resulting in the theft of over £350 worth of stock – was swiftly resolved thanks to instant communication via the radio system. The alert enabled immediate coordination between businesses, the York BID Street Rangers, North Yorkshire Police, and CCTV, leading to the suspect’s arrest and full recovery of the stolen goods.

Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID, said: “We’re excited to take the lead on this important initiative. This is a fantastic opportunity for York’s businesses to come together, strengthen communication, and strengthen York’s reputation as a city where people feel safe to live, work, and visit.”

The York BID Safety Network complements other successful programmes run by York BID including the Street Rangers, Best Bar None, and Taxi Marshals, all working together to enhance safety, reduce anti-social behaviour, and build a more welcoming city for residents and visitors alike.
