York recognised as top performer at annual National Best Bar None Awards

York has been recognised as a national leader in creating a safe and welcoming nighttime economy, after winning Best New Scheme at the annual National Best Bar None Awards. The ceremony took place at the House of Lords on Tuesday 24th March.

Supported by the Home Office, the accreditation scheme is the gold standard for safer socialising. It recognises licensed premises that create well-managed, safe environments for staff and customers alike, helping ensure York’s vibrant hospitality scene is at its best.

Since July 2024, York BID has proudly delivered the scheme locally, working in partnership with both national chains and independent venues. Participating businesses are assessed across four key areas: venue management; staff training and care; customer safety and welfare; and customer service and community.

22 businesses across York city centre have achieved the accreditation so far. York BID will hold the city’s first-ever local Best Bar None Awards this summer, giving venue managers the opportunity to celebrate their team’s hard work.

Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID, said: ‘We’re so pleased to be recognised as Best New Scheme at the National Best Bar None Awards. This accolade reflects the dedication, collaboration, and hard work of all our partners, including local venues, North Yorkshire Police, and City of York Council. Best Bar None gives residents and visitors confidence that they’re experiencing the very best in customer care, safety, and community.’ Best Bar None plays a key role in supporting York’s Purple Flag accreditation, recognising the city as among the safest, most welcoming, and best-managed nighttime destinations.
