In 2021 we once again brought Yorkshire Day celebrations to the city in partnership with Make It York and City of York Council.

Three days of celebrations saw a series of Yorkshire-themed activities in the city city centre, including a selfie competition, Family-friendly films, and delicious local food and drink from York Gin, Crumbs Cupcakery and Love Cheese.

A giant screen in St Sampson’s Square showed some brilliant footage of York down the years, courtesy of the Yorkshire Film Archive. It also showed the classic, Yorkshire-set Aardman movie Chicken Run.

There was a Yorkshire pudding-themed competition run with the York Roast Co and the Grand Cookery School. in which 6 budding chefs battled it out with their very own Yorkshire pudding creations. Tom Casson eventually took the crown with his “war of the roses” fusing the classic Yorkshire pudding with a Lancashire hotpot.

The BID also ran it’s very first “Si Thi” selfie competition to find the best Yorkshire selfie, with our giant white-rose decorated deckchair and floral flag made of real Yorkshire roses. The best snap winning a night for 2 at the Grand hotel was taken by Rachel wright of her 2 daughters Izzy and Leila. The runners up spot went to Katherine and Caitlin from Asgard.

Make It York brought the regional final of the Young Traders Markets to Parliament Street, While the Minster FM roadshow team were on hand with family games at their summer of selfies. Not forgetting our Yorkshire offering trail where visitors could seek out the best local products on sale in the city.
