Volunteers join York BID in sprucing up city centre

York City Centre received a refresh this morning, courtesy of local volunteers who joined the York BID team to brighten up King’s Staith.

Across two days, nearly 100 volunteers joined York BID to repaint bike racks, benches, and bollards to spruce up the riverside area after Winter. Residents and businesses took part, including GMI, Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors, Gate & Bar, Primark, Boxxe and many more.

The session was part of York BID’s Rejuvenation Days, a volunteer-powered initiative to keep York looking its best by cleaning and repainting street furniture. Since the project began in January 2024, nearly 400 volunteers have given up their time to refresh over 1,740 pieces of infrastructure across 66 streets in York.

If you would like to be part of the growing community effort to enhance York city centre, York BID will be holding more Rejuvenation Days on:

  • Wednesday 2nd September
  • Friday 4th September
  • Tuesday 8th September

Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID, said: ‘It’s fantastic to see so many businesses, residents, and community groups come together to make a real difference to our city. What might seem like small touches – a freshly painted bench or bike rack – all add up to make a huge difference to how York feels for everyone who lives, works, or visits here.’

York BID’s Rejuvenation Days coincided with a riverside cleanup led by The York Dungeons, where a number of city businesses joined the Dungeon’s Team to litter pick the stretch from Ouse Bridge to Millennium Bridge.

Mark Mattinson, General Manager at The York Dungeon, said: ‘The turnout was incredible for our Riverside Clean. It’s great to see businesses and residents getting stuck in and doing their bit for our city. When initiatives like this happen side by side, you can really see the difference being made.’

Rejuvenation Days are part of York BID’s ongoing work to enhance public spaces, support local businesses, and create a welcoming city for all.
