This mural was commissioned by York BID as part of the York Festival of Ideas and celebrates the Power of Place.

The 20m2 mural was designed and painted by York-born artist SledOne, who's trademark vibrant, layered style can be seen in the mural's striking typography and large-scale portrait of a Peregrine Falcon, which famously nest at York Minster.

The series of mini murals on Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square take inspiration from York’s world-famous Gothic and Medieval stonemasonry, reimagined through a contemporary lens by York-born artist Leah Pendleton.

Leah used the decorative, architectural details found around York to develop graphic patterns that highlight the extraordinary skills of the craftspeople that have shaped the city we see today, giving them a modern, colourful twist.

The installations also celebrate York's status as one of only 26 UNESCO Cities of Media Arts.

In partnership with Explore York Libraries & Archives, York Civic Trust and York Glaziers Trust, York BID commissioned 12 "mini murals" on BT exchange boxes on the Stonebow to act as a creative intervention against vandalism and celebrate York's stained-glass history.

The murals showcase the work of J.W. Knowles & Sons, a local family firm of stained-glass restorers. An extensive archival collection of the Knowles work is held at Explore York Archives.

The project was funded through a National Archives Engagement Grant.

Artist: Selkie Ray

This 23m long mural was delivered as part of York Cares Big Community Challenge 2023. In partnership with St Nicks and City of York Council's Environment & Communities Team, the challenge focused on the maintenance and restoration of river and wetland habitats in York, which culminated in improving this section of the Foss Walk.

The 'Beneath Usa' mural ('usa' meaning 'water' in Celtic) was created by Yorkshire-based artist Selkie Ray, who wanted to represent the peaceful feeling of being beside the riverbank and celebrate the diversity of York's waterways nature.

The series of mini murals on Piccadilly, Coppergate, and Fishergate celebrate the array of flora and fauna that call York home, from the tiny tansy beetle to families of mischievous foxes.

Created by local artist, Rob Stothert, the colourful artwork pays homage to York’s rich history and culture through references to iconic landmarks, architecture, and patterns. Informed by the non-organic nature of the cabinet boxes, Rob used simple geometric forms and patterns to weave together something of the city’s essence with its animal inhabitants.

Commissioned by York BID in April 2026, this 50-metre-wide installation has been designed by Rob Stothert in partnership with York Civic Trust. The mural wraps the long-empty Castle Mills hoarding, turning a former graffiti hotspot into a vibrant work of art.

This digital mural is the largest public art commission in York and celebrates York's status as a UNESCO City of Media Arts.

Artist: Emmeline North

This mural, on York Barbican, celebrates culture and music. The mural features large flowers; metaphorical with York’s blossoming creative and music scene.

The mural was painted using environmentally friendly paint that is proven to absorb CO2 from the environment, creating a ‘living’ mural that acts in a similar manner to an adult tree. It was created by Yorkshire artist Emmeline North, a firm believer in the concept of turning art galleries inside out.

This mural, in the Coppergate Centre, was inspired by the Coppergate dig of the 1970s which unearthered 9m of archaeological layers. The phrase 'Make History Every Day' is taken from the York Narrative; the characters dotted around the mural highlight the importance of individual action, while the artefacts represent the deposits unearthered during the excavation.

The mural was created by York-born artist Leah Pendleton, who creates bold designs featuring typography and playful illustrations.

Artist: STATIC

This vibrant mural was commissioned in 2019 to freshen up the little-used alleyway between Boots and WHSmith on Coney Street. The BID also installed street lighting to reduce anti-social behaviour in the area.

This project was in collaboration with local urban arts organisation, Art of Protest Projects.

It took Yorkshire-born, internationally renowned artist duo STATIC three days to complete the mural; their first solo piece created within their home county.

Artist: United by Design and Kitty Greenbrown

York BID partnered York-based brand and design agency United by Design and poet, writer and performer Kitty Greenbrown to create ‘What we’re made of’ – a love letter to the city of York told through poetry, typography, colour, pattern and symbolism.

Installed across 14 electrical cabinets and bins, the individual artworks combine to form a single poem celebrating York in all its dimensions: from the immediately recognisable to the easily overlooked, and from the city’s grand stories to the small details and everyday experiences that give it character. Each installation includes a QR code inviting people to discover the inspiration and meaning behind its particular line.

Artists: York College & University Centre Students

In 2024, York BID coordinated a transformative mural project in North Street Gardens, in collaboration with York Cares and the City of York Council's Eco Team, as part of the York Cares Big Community Challenge. These murals were painted by BA Graphic & Communication Design students from York College & University Centre to celebrate the history of the Gardens.

Artist: Art of Protest Projects

In June 2025, York BID commissioned Art of Protest Projects to paint this colourful mural celebrating the contributions of the Rowntree family to the city of York. The project is in partnership with York Cares, the City of York Eco Team, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Joseph Rowntree Society and has been funded by Nestle.

This piece was commissioned by environmental charity New Networks for Nature and supported by York BID to raise awareness of the decline of the Tansy Beetle.

Known as 'the Jewel of York', the Tansy Beetle is an endangered species which, for a long time, was only found on a short stretch of the River Ouse.

The mural was created by street artist ATM, who specialises in painting endangered species on urban walls to draw attention to the environmental crisis.
